This long-awaited issues dives into in
San Diego's underbelly with stories and
interviews covering our local corrupt
politicians, crime and rock'n'roll scene.Contents include:
True Crime in San Diego: Five artists illustrate
depictions of real crimes taken from
actual media releases by the SDPD.
The Loser's Guide to San Diego:
This time the spotlight is shined on
the long-gone Sambo's Restaurant
chain and how 10¢ buttomless mugs
o' joe and 45¢ short stacks once had
early risers by the tail.
Dick Murphy Knows How to Rock: We
sat down with former mayor of San Diego,
Dick Murphy during his campaign and asked
him to give us the lowdown on what bands
rock his world. That's right, the man Time
Magazine named as one of the "Worst Mayors
in America" took the time to answer the one
question San Diego's citizen's really needed to
know before the election.
Royal Flush: Follow a drop of water through
the San Diego sewer system from the
tap to the Pacific Ocean and learn how the
city treats more than 180 gallons of wastewater
each day.
Genetic Disorder takes on
Duke Cunningham: We meet up with disgraced
San Diego former Congressman Randy "Duke"
Cunningham and ask for an autograph. And we have
the picture to prove it! Of course this was before
he was accused of taking bribes and sent to
prison for more than eight years.
North Park Rules: A two-page map of San
Diego's North Park neighborhood. The very
undetailed maps points travelers to pawn shops,
thrift stores, gay bathhouses, former punk clubs
and the crash site of Flight 182 where more
than 100 people died in a 1979 air disaster.
An interview with the Atoms: Larry and Jimmy
the Worm have a nice long chat with Chula
Vista's punky new wavers about punker parents,
learning how to play an instrument and hanging
out with Devo.
Dine & Dash: Long-time Genetic Disorder associate
"Squire" Bill Clare tells a story about being
scammed twice by the same people while managing
a pizza joint. Larry has been telling the story at
parties for years, so it's about time it made into an
issue so he can finally quit repeating it.
Shutterpunk: Photographer Eric Rife shows off
his stuff.
Deadguy: Larry pulled a roll of film out of the vault
of hardcore band Deadguy playing a party at
Wren's house in 1996. The bass player rocked out so
hard, he went right through the wall. Luckily, one of
the roommates knew how to do drywall.
RIP RKL: We pay tribute to RKL after vocalist Jason
Sears dies undergoing drug treatment in Tijuana.
The artwork features two fliers for San Diego RKL
shows at Jackie Robinson's YMCA and MUJA Hall in
the late '80s.
Music and Zine Reviews: Enough said.
The End: Another classic San Diego punk flier. This
time it's Broken Bones and Battalion of Saints at
Fairmount Hall.
